I found a couple of good links:
https://thishosting.rocks/best-cheap-managed-vps/
This page lists a handful of non-EIG companies that offer managed VPS hosting.
This website lists dirt-cheap mostly unmanaged VPS hosting companies.

Oh... yummy. Thank you!
My personal straightjacket in this is my very tiny income. I am retired and my Social Security benefit payment is all of $867 a month. My web site building and so forth is dabbling, but it helps keep my brain working.
None of my sites are for clients or bringing in any money. I do have several email addresses I use, so a service that offers actual email servers would be nice. And without incremental costs for every single additional address please.
My needs may be a little different than others here- about 20 client sites to migrate, mostly Asia-based. Most Wordpress, but not all, so looking for an established managed VPN with Asia datacenters. Preferablly well-established medium sized or larger, and non-EIG, Godaddy, etc. I don't trust small or young providers as they may sellout or fold which leaves me back in migration hell all over again.
So I'm currently leaning toward a2 - https://www.a2hosting.com/vps-hosting/core - they have unmanaged vps, and managed VPS with/without root access, free email, similar datacenters to Webfaction (US, EU, Singapore), good reputation on /r/webhosting, etc., supposedly good support.
Main downside for me is using cPanel, but can live with it, and also paying more for lower specs, but that seems to be the case everywhere. Also actual costs may require a bit of math due to add-ons, temporary coupons, etc.
I may not have time to migrate all my sites until March or so though, so will keep an eye out here and poking around elsewhere for ideas
I am looking at migrating a django site off of Webfaction due to GoDaddy. I made a new thread/discussion with what I've found. You may find it useful even if you're not using django.
I found this site which seems legitimately neutral and allows user reviews: https://hostadvice.com/ There are tons of search parameters to try and narrow down what you need.
I didn't know what you guys meant about non-EIG companies until I looked up EIG. I'm going to avoid all those companies.
From reading online, people seem to rave about Get Lark. Their website doesn't seem to go into much detail about options available, but it says they can customize for you.
@ndjensen: Thanks for both of these links. Once things calm down, I'm going to dig into both of these a bit more. Get Lark looks promising!
I am currently kicking the tires at A2HOSTING.COM
while they are a few $$ more expensive than webfaction so far i don't mind the experience ( cPanel not my fave ). a lot more trying out before i can say if it's my new webhosting home. For now i am on a monthly plan.
I tried DreamHost but i really disliked their naming conventions for USERS and Accounts. ugh.
I don't have a problem with it, perhaps because I am used to it. But this is a thing that VERY much bugged me with some hosts I tried. My username at one was literally "work" because of the first domain I moved there.
I'm glad I'm not the only who is bugged by this. I wish they were more straightforward at the beginning by simply asking what username we'd like to use.
I tried A2, as well. But they were really, really expensive. $25 a month vs $10 at WebFaction. At least they had a fairly high inode limit at 600,000 inodes. Most other hosts set that limit at 200,000 inodes.
Currently also trying out webalternative.net they use a DirectAdmin web control CP.
cant say i am sold on either A2 or WebAlt.... i can see this switch is going to be a challenge
Anyone has had experience with hostiso.com?
Their shared hosting seems cheap, fast and with enough features (for PHP and node at least) for a replacement. I was looking at the enterprise and pro packages. They've been around since 2010 or 2013...
So, can anyone spot any show stoppers?
